OKTIBBEHA COUNTY


Exhibit Days
The 2010 Oktibbeha County Exhibit Days is just around the corner. Booklets are ready to be picked up next week. We will check exhibits in on Monday, September 13, 2010 from 3-6 p.m. at Bost Building B on MSU Campus. Check out will be on September 14 from 3-5 p.m. Everyone must complete a registration form with all entries listed. Complete your forms and bring to the Extension office by 9/3/10. We also have your tags available, you will be able to pick up when you turn in registration form.

**New rule everyone is limited to maximum of 30 exhibits. If you have any questions call us at 323-5918.


2010 4-H Shooting Sports North Volunteer Training
Bayou Academy in Cleveland, MS will be the meeting sites for the next 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Leader Training Workshop to be held August 28-29. Discipline training will take place inside the Bayou Academy School with all outdoor activities being held at a local range. Participants must be at least 21 years of age in order to become a certified volunteer. Individual disciplines will only be offered if at least 5 participants are registered by the final deadline. Any discipline with insufficient registration will not be offered in the final program. Each county may bring one or more agents or volunteers in each of the six disciplines that will be offered; however, at this training session each person can complete certification in only one of the following disciplines*: Pistol, Rifle, Muzzleloader, Archery, Shotgun, and Coordinator.

REGISTRATION WILL BE FROM JULY 26TH TO AUGUST 12TH
Also include an alternate discipline in the advent that the primary does not make. Participants that sign up for a discipline that does not make will be notified that they have been moved to their alternate discipline



LIVESTOCK NEWS
NEW VOLUNTEER LEADERS WHO MAY BE HELPING YOUR 4-H’ERS GROOM ANIMALS MUST BE OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED VOLUNTEER LEADERS OF THE 4-H PROGRAM IN MISSISSIPPI. Volunteer leaders who will be assisting 4-H’ers with animals at the show and all parents that assist with animals should be signed up as volunteers and be ethics certified.

OFFICIAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE – REMINDER
An Official Health Certificate with each animal identified will be required on all livestock showing at the 2010 Mississippi State Fair. This includes all market animals, beef breeding cattle, commercial beef heifers, dairy cattle (purebred and commercial dairy heifers), dairy goats and commercial meat goat does.

MARKET LAMB EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE! Remember the minimum weight of market lambs is 70 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their lambs and declaring their animal’s show weight on a weight card. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.


COMMERCIAL DAIRY HEIFER EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Remember the minimum weight of commercial dairy heifers is 200 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair.


NO GROOMING CONTEST AT DIXIE NATIONAL JUNIOR ROUND-UP – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Since the Mississippi Livestock Directors did not take any action on reinstituting the grooming contest, there will not be one held at the 2011 Dixie National Junior Round-Up. Their minutes stated that items that they did not discuss would remain the same for the upcoming year.



Expressive Arts Workshop:
There will be an Expressive Arts Workshop held Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 2-5 p.m. Deadline to register is September 3, 2010.

2010 4-H Shooting Sports North Volunteer Training

Bayou Academy in Cleveland, MS will be the meeting sites for the next 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Leader Training Workshop to be held August 28-29. Discipline training will take place inside the Bayou Academy School with all outdoor activities being held at a local range.

PARTICIPATION

Participants must be at least 21 years of age in order to become a certified volunteer.

To make better use of your resources, individual disciplines will only be offered if at least 5 participants are registered by the final deadline. Any discipline with insufficient registration will not be offered in the final program. Each county may bring one or more agents or volunteers in each of the six disciplines that will be offered; however, at this training session each person can complete certification in only one of the following disciplines*: Pistol, Rifle, Muzzleloader, Archery, Shotgun, and Coordinator

ARCHERY involves a fascinating group of sports for people of all ages. The fundamentals are simple. The requirements are few. A new archer can be shooting well within a short time, if he or she has the benefit of a planned approach to developing the basics of form.

MUZZLELOADING provides participants with the basics of muzzleloading history while developing familiarity with muzzleloading arms. Trainees will learn the use of black powder and Pyrodex as well as other muzzleloading accessories.

PISTOL participants will learn to understand the fundamentals of safety while getting hands-on experience with both.22 and air pistols. Trainees will learn to recognize and identify the parts of pistols and their functions, understand sight alignment and trigger control, and learn basic range commands and shooting procedures.

SHOTGUN trainees will learn to understand shotgun parts and their function as well as learn how to identify action types. Participants will learn the differences between shotguns and rifles and understand choke basics and shotgun uses. Additionally, classroom and hands-on training will provide individuals with an understanding of shotgun safety and basic functions of ammunition components.

RIFLE explores .22 and air rifle parts and their function. Participants will learn how to use different types of sights, determine eye dominance, and understand range etiquette through both classroom and hands-on range experiences.

COORDINATOR provides participants with the necessary tools in order to become a better organized club in their community. This training session will be offered as an official in-service training to those agents who are registered. Agents will receive in service training credit of 16 hours.

TRAINING SCHEDULE
This training requires your attendance and participation for the DURATION in order to receive certification for the discipline chosen. In order to cover all of the components during the limited Saturday/Sunday time period, we request that you pay close attention to the agenda that will be handed out during registration on Saturday morning.

LIVESTOCK NEWS UPDATES

NEW VOLUNTEER LEADERS MUST BE CERTIFIED

NEW VOLUNTEER LEADERS WHO MAY BE HELPING YOUR 4-H’ERS GROOM ANIMALS MUST BE OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED VOLUNTEER LEADERS OF THE 4-H PROGRAM IN MISSISSIPPI. Be sure to list the volunteer leaders who will be assisting your 4-H’ers with animals at the show. All parents that assist with animals should be signed up as volunteers.

REMINDER: NEW 4-H/FFA MEMBERS MUST BE ETHICS CERTIFIED TO SHOW!!
The Mississippi State Fair will be here soon and the Mississippi Livestock Quality Assurance training for NEW exhibitors, parents or guardians, and volunteers must be completed by September 1, 2010.
SENIOR 4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST
The senior 4-H livestock judging contest will be held Saturday, October 9th. This contest will be held in conjunction with the FFA livestock judging contest.  All 4-H contestants in the 2010 contest must be pre-registered by September 24, 2010. A county may enter as many senior contestants in the contest as they desire. However, you must designate your teams, if you have more than enough contestants to fill one team (Example: Oktibbeha A Team and Oktibbeha B Team). Individuals may compete for individual awards.
The state winning senior 4-H Livestock Judging Team will represent Mississippi at the Western National 4-H Roundup in Denver, CO in January 2011.

Each county will receive 2 Mississippi State Fair Premium Books in the county packet as soon as they are available. A PDF file of the premium book will also be sent by email and posted on the MSUcares.com website under Livestock, 4-H Youth and 2010 MS State Fair Premium Book. Please make sure your exhibitors and parents have a copy of the rules for the shows in which they participate. A copy of the schedule of events is included in this newsletter.

DAIRY SWEETHEART CONTESTS AND MEAT GOAT PRINCESS CONTEST
A Junior and Senior Dairy Cattle Sweetheart, a Junior and Senior Dairy Goat Sweetheart, and a Junior and Senior Meat Goat Princess will be selected during the Mississippi State Fair. Winners will be selected based on poise, beauty, personality and knowledge of their project. The top 3 of each division will receive awards. Rules and regulations concerning the contest are found in the Mississippi State Fair catalog. Please have the entries to our office by September 24, 2010. Please encourage your girls enrolled in dairy and goat projects to enter this year. Winners will be announced according to times listed in the 2010 Mississippi State Fair Premium Book.

OUTSTANDING SHEPHERD AWARD AT STATE FAIR
Individual exhibitors or county groups can enter. Competition will be based on (1) creativity, (2) educational value of exhibit, (3) attractiveness of exhibit and (4) cleanliness of pens and exhibit area. The Mississippi Junior Sheep Association will sponsor this award which goes to an exhibitor or county group that maintains the most outstanding stall area and educational exhibit. Judging will be from 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 1, to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2010. The winner will be announced during the Junior Sheep Show. Contestants and county groups should register at the weigh-in Friday afternoon and pick up their exhibitor number.

COMMERCIAL HEIFER AND MARKET STEER EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors that are exhibiting steers and commercial beef and dairy heifers about horns. All commercial heifers and steers showing at the Mississippi State Fair and District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows must be polled or dehorned with no scurs or re-growth to exceed 1½ inches above the skin line. Remember the minimum weight on commercial heifers is 500 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their commercial heifers and market steers and declaring their animal’s show weight on a weight card. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

MARKET GOAT EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors who are exhibiting market goats about horns. Goats may be shown that are polled, dehorned, or disbudded with no re-growth to exceed 1½” above the skin line. Removal of horns is not allowed on the show grounds. Remember the minimum weight of market goats is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their commercial heifers and market steers and declaring their animal’s show weight on a weight card. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

COMMERCIAL MEAT GOAT DOE SHOW EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Remember the minimum weight of commercial meat goat does is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their commercial heifers and market steers and declaring their animal’s show weight on a weight card. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

Advisory Council canceled

The 4-H Advisory Council that was scheduled for Wednesday, July 14, 2010 has been canceled.

District and State Horse show

District Horse Show - Congrats to all youth who partcipated in the district horse show. you did a great job. we are very proud of you. Oktibbeha county had several Top 3 High Point Winners. Including at least two overall high point winners. 1st & 2nd in jr public speakin, 1st and 3rd in jr individual demonstration.  3rd in junior horse hippology.

State Show - Congrats to all youth who partcipated in the state horse show. you did a great job. we are very proud of you. Oktibbeha county had 4 going to regionals (Taylor Dunn, John Luke Thompson, Rachel Moore & Tyler Moore). 1st & 4th in jr public speakin, 4th & 6th sr public speakin. 1st place horse hippology- denver here we come. I'm so proud of ya'll. keep up the good work.
