Feb/March newsletter

Shooting Sports!


Here are the practice dates and locations of the shooting sports program.
Rifle
- meets every Monday starting at 3:00 p.m.
-Location - Starkville Gun Club on 16th Section Road

Archery
- meets every Friday starting at 2:30 p.m.
-Location - Indian Ridge farms on Old West Point Road

Shotgun
-meets every Monday starting at 3:00 p.m.
-Location - Starkville Gun Club on 16th Section Road

Clay County will also assist us in getting youth certified. If you have conflicts with the above dates, call us and we will give you information on their practice dates.

Land Judging Contests

If you are interested in learning more about the soils in Mississippi call our office with your name and ages and we will call you when the 1st practices begin. The State Contest will be March.

State 4-H Council Officers Nominations
State 4-H Council Officers (a part of the State 4-H Leadership Team) are senior age 4-H members, who are 15 - 18 years old on January 1, may be elected annually to the office of president, vice president, secretary, parliamentarian, reporter, and song leader. Four district vice presidents are also elected to represent the northeast district, northwest district, southeast district and southwest districts. These officers will preside and assist with district and state 4-H events and activities. The application process includes submitting a resume and cover letter to the Central Mississippi Research Extension Center (CMREC) by April 1.

All Star Applications & Scholarship

This is a great opportunity for 4-H’ers to qualify for All-stars you must be the following:
• 16 years of age or older (as of Jan. 1)
• active member for 3 years
If you are interested you must complete and submit a 4-H All Star Application. All information is available to pick up at the Oktibbeha Co. 4-H Office and must be returned by March 1.

SPRING BREAK ACTIVITIES
The Junior Council suggested holding our County contests during Spring Break all during one day! The following are activities that will be taking place during spring break.

Public Speaking Contest

The Public Speaking Contest will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2010 starting at 2 p.m. at the Extension Office.

County Judging Contests
The County Judging Contest will be Wednesday, March 16, 2010 at the Extension Office from 10-4 p.m.

Visual Contest
The Visual Contest will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2010 from 10 a.m. at the Extension Office. Deadline to register for the Visual Contest is March 15. Be sure to call the 4-H office at 323-5918 with your name/age/topic.

4-H Talent Show
The Talent Show will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2010 at the Oktibbeha County Extension Office beginning at 5 p.m. Deadline to register for the Talent Show is March 15. Be sure to call the 4-H office at 323-5918 and register.

4-H Scholarship Application Deadlines!
The following 4-H Scholarship applications will be due in the Oktibbeha 4-H Office no later than March 21, 2011:
• 4-H Scholarship applications
• 4-H Honor Club Applications
• Powell Gray 4-H Scholarship
• Marilyn Purdie Scholarship
• MS 4-H Volunteer Leader Assn. Scholarship

Field and Stream Registration
Anyone planning on participating in the North Field and Stream Shooting Sports Contest in April must complete and return the following: Registration form, registration fee, Health Card and Code of Conduct Forms to the Extension Office. These are due in our office by April 1, 2011. This year’s contest will again be held in Tupelo.

Make-UP Contest Day
I have scheduled a makeup day for all contest for April 5, 2011 from 1-5 p.m. at the Extension Office. If you cannot make one of the contest during Spring Break call to register for makeup. If you cannot make either you will need to make arrangement with me to make up your contest.

Club Congress
The 2011 State 4-H Club Congress is just around the corner. This is for Senior 4-H members. The dates of the congress are May 25-27, 2011 at MSU Campus. Cost has not been announced yet. The county will again pay for a part of this depending on the number of youth wishing to participate. You will be responsible for the remaining part.

In order to go you must be active in Oktibbeha County 4-H and must have competed in the County Visual Presentation, Public Speaking, and/or County Judging Contest. Deadline to return congress registration form will be mid April 2011. Call for more information at 323-5918.

Horse Deadlines:
If you plan on showing horses in 4H this year here are some important deadlines:
• You must Own horse by May 1, 2011
• You must have completed enrollment for 4H by May 1, 2011.
• Rule books and entry forms are available about April 2011.
• All new riders must have ethics training. Call our office to schedule this.
